Chapter Thirteen
âCome,â Rafael repeated. She reluctantly backed away. The separation was already a physical ache.
The old man grabbed her hand. His skin was dry and lined, but not repulsive. âYou may experience some dizziness, my dear,â he whispered. Her gaze met Daneâs and then the world went blank. It was pitch dark for a few moments, then colours exploded into her vision with whirling spiral patterns that made her feel odd. The disorientation sent her head spinning. Suddenly, there was a hard surface beneath her feet. Dizziness made her lose focus, and it wasnât until she found herself horizontal in a strange young manâs arms did she realise that she had keeled over.
The young man gaped at her, his eyes wide. âThank you, Max, for catching Annwyn,â said Rafaelâs disembodied voice.
âAnnwyn?â He blinked a few times, mouth gaping. He was young with short dark hair and startling hazel eyes that appeared to have violet pigments. He was very pale with a smooth complexion. Dressed in a light-coloured suit, he hoisted her back up to her feet in one fluid movement, retaining a hold on her as she swayed.
âYes, my name is Annwyn,â she said as she removed herself from the young manâs embrace. He politely stepped away from her and his expression closed over. Looking at him, he seemed surprised by her arrival.
Max bowed swiftly, a short nod of his head. âIâm Max, Rafaelâs assistant.â
Offering her hand to shake, she dropped it quickly when all he did was glance at it. To cover her nervousness, she turned around to take in her surroundings. âGoodness, is this a castle?â
Stone archways towered over cathedral doors and the interior walls were clad in dark wooden wainscoting. Overhead, a timber ceiling rested on heavy, wide beams. Annwyn turned full circle, taking in the room, the heavy but comfortable-looking furniture and the large fire, throwing golden light onto a cowskin rug.
Rafael looked embarrassed. His face reddened and he shrugged. âItâs not that big a castle, but it has been in my family for a few generations. Max, can you show Annwyn to one of the guest rooms? The tartan room I think will be best.â
Max bowed sharply from the waist. âCertainly, sir. Should I order some food for you both? Cook is due to go to the market soon, but she had made lunch.â
Rafael waved his hand. âNot for me, but see to it that Annwyn is fed well. She is on a different time. No doubt itâs nearly breakfast time where she was.â
Annwyn thought it wasnât long since dinner, but then she had lost track of time, being hypnotised and tested. If they were in Scotland then it was ten or so hours behind.
âAs you wish,â Max replied before indicating which direction she should go.
Impulsively, she hugged Rafael. âThank you.â He started, then relaxed as she pulled away. âThank you for everything.â
He squinted at her. âYouâre welcome, my dear. Have a sleep now, and Iâll call for you around noon tomorrow. We will start on our sessions then.
